PM2.5 is one of the most common terms in air-quality reporting. It refers to airborne particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or smaller—small enough to remain suspended and travel deep into the respiratory system.
A reading needs context
A single number is a snapshot. Location, weather, instrument placement, averaging period and nearby activities can all affect the result. Useful interpretation begins by documenting those conditions.

- ✓Compare like-for-like locations and time periods
- ✓Confirm that the instrument is maintained and calibrated
From screening to defensible evidence
Portable monitors are excellent for screening, identifying patterns and locating possible sources. Formal compliance work may require a specified reference method, quality-control plan and documented chain of data.
Treat PM2.5 as part of a pattern, not an isolated score. Good records make the reading far more useful.
